Instagram users were shocked when Reels suddenly became flooded with violent and graphic content, sparking concern across social media. Last month, Instagram made significant changes to its moderation system, scaling back AI restrictions in favor of more “free speech” and ending third-party fact-checking. But the result? Sensitive content, disturbing videos, and violent clips flooded people’s feeds—even with the highest safety settings enabled.

This comes as Instagram is rumored to be testing a separate Reels app under “Project Ray,” which could explain why the algorithm suddenly went rogue. But there’s an even darker side to this: the human moderators responsible for filtering harmful content. Many of them work in low-paying, high-stress conditions, forced to review extreme content for hours daily. Reports from former moderators reveal widespread PTSD, mental health struggles, and even lawsuits against Meta and TikTok for failing to protect workers.
